MENUMENU

Baths, Showers and sinks

Less than 1% of water on Earth can be used by people, the rest is frozen or in salt water oceans. In 1830 one person in the UK used 18 litres of water a day, today that average is 150 litres. EcoFrenzy shows you how to save water, energy, money and the environment when using this increasingly precious commodity.

An average daily shower of 40°C usually lasts 8 minutes. (these figures are based on using an 89% efficient new gas condensing boiler)

Power Shower

8 minutes (136 litres of water) 60p

4 minutes (68 litres of water) 30p

From these figures you can see that reducing from an 8 minute to a 4 minute power shower SAVES
£110 per person/year (= 245kg of CO₂)

Standard Shower

8 minutes (62 ltr of water) 26p

4 minutes (31 ltr of water) 13p

From these figures you can see that reducing from an 8 minute to a 4 minute standard shower SAVES
£47 per person/year (= 106kg of CO₂)

Average cost of a bath

(80 litres of water) 34p

£124 per person/year (= 274kg of CO₂)

All figures based on combined gas, electricity and metered water savings.

Reduce an 8 minute ELECTRIC SHOWER (9kW) at 40°C to 4 minutes and you will use 36 litres less hot water and save about 16p per shower (£57 per year = 103kg of CO₂).

A £30 aerated shower head can reduce water flow but won’t compromise on shower pressure. They maintain the pressure by mixing air with water to produce a steady even spray. An 8 minute daily power shower will use 41 litres less hot water, saving 18p per shower (£66 per year = 147kg of CO₂).

When purchasing a new bath or shower, search for these money and water saving features.

AERATED SHOWER HEAD

An aerated showerhead can reduce water flow but won’t compromise on shower pressure. They maintain the pressure by mixing in air with water to produce a steady, even spray.

FLOW CONTROLS

If you decide to buy a power shower pick one that has flow controls. That way you can reduce the water output.

SHOWER HEAD SPRAY PATTERN

With any type of shower, check to see if you can adjust the shower head spray pattern – you may find that you can reduce the flow of water.

COMBINED BATH AND SHOWER

Why not have the best of both worlds by fitting a shower over your bath?

CHOOSE APPROPRIATE BATH SIZE

Pick a bath size that is comfortable for the largest member of the family but not oversized, otherwise you will waste water, energy and money.
